Why are heat pumps so efficient?
When it comes to energy ratings, heat pumps are rated A+++. This is because for every unit of energy they use, they create four units of heat energy to keep your room at a comfortable temperature.
Heat pumps warm your home by extracting warmth from the outside air and pumping it inside. In summer, they cool your home by extracting the heat from inside and pumping it out. By contrast, gas central heating burns a fossil fuel to heat our radiators. And fans work by using electricity to move air around and create a sense of cool. This means that central heating and fans use considerably more energy than they create.

How can I make my heat pump run more efficiently?
The greater the difference between the natural temperature and the desired temperature, the harder any heating or cooling system has to work. So it’s worth considering whether you need your home to be as warm or as cool as it is, or if you could turn your thermostat up or down. You can experiment – adjust the temperature by just one degree and see if you’re still comfortable.
Effective insulation in your home can also make a difference. Once you’ve heated or cooled your space to the right temperature, don’t let that right-temperature air escape through draughty windows or an uninsulated loft.
Think about how long you use your heat pump for as well. Heat pumps are more efficient when they are on for longer periods, and less efficient if they are turned on and off.
